Catch basins with standing water are ideal mosquito-breeding grounds. Our couriers target this source directly by applying Vectolex WSP, a selective microbial insecticide for use against mosquito larvae.
Vectolex WSP breaks down in roughly three weeks, so our couriers are continually reapplying the product to ensure its constant presence in the catch basins. San Francisco's sewer system is, unlike most American cities', a combined system, meaning water from storm drains does not flow directly into the ocean or rivers (find out more at www.sfsewer.org), but rather is treated along with wastewater from homes and businesses.
Our couriers use cellular phones equipped with a Global Positioning System program. With this we are able to record the location of each catch basin and track whether or not Vectolex WSP was applied. We do not apply Vectolex to dry, overflowing, or litter-clogged drains.
In addition to the bicycle street team, we give special attention to public schools and medical centers. We also trap mosquitoes at reservoirs, water treatment plants, and around Lake Merced. Read our letter of commendation from the Department of Public Health (pdf format).
